Councillor Rags Sandhu had the privilege of attending this year’s Bali Yatra celebration, held at the prestigious House of Lords in London, an event that brought together cultural leaders, parliamentarians, entrepreneurs, and members of the British–Indian community to honour one of India’s most historic maritime festivals. Hosted in one of the UK’s most iconic political institutions, the gathering highlighted the growing appreciation for global cultural heritage and the strengthening of ties between the UK and India.This was particularly special for Cllr. Sandhu as the inauguration event was held within Cllr. Sandhu’s borough, Bexley last year, in he’s opening address he said “I thank the Odessa community for delivering on their promise made to me last year, you said the second event would be memorable, and you were right. What can be more memorable than todays event overlooking the boats up and down the Thames”.
Bali Yatra, which translates to “Voyage to Bali”, commemorates the ancient maritime voyages undertaken by the people of Odisha, who set sail for Bali, Java, Sumatra, and other parts of Southeast Asia to engage in trade and cultural exchange. The spirit of exploration, entrepreneurship, and cross-cultural connection celebrated by the festival resonated strongly with Rags, who has long championed innovation, community engagement, and the value of cultural identity in modern society.
The event at the House of Lords offered a unique blend of tradition and diplomacy. Distinguished speakers reflected on the festival’s historical significance, as well as its relevance in a contemporary world where collaboration across borders is more important than ever.
