From Dartford to the Council Chamber
A timeline of service, enterprise, and community leadership spanning over three decades.
Dartford Roots
Rags grew up in the Dartford area of Kent, part of a close-knit Sikh family with deep ties to the local community. His father, Darshan Singh Sandhu MBE, instilled in him the values of hard work, integrity, and service to others that would shape his entire career.
Education
Rags studied for his BTEC at North Kent College in Dartford, equipping himself with practical skills and knowledge that would serve as the foundation for his future business ventures. His education grounded him in the realities of working life and enterprise.
Traffic Officer to Entrepreneur
Rags began his career as a Traffic Officer at the Dartford Tunnel, gaining first-hand experience of public service. His entrepreneurial drive then led him to establish a successful mobile bar hire business before co-founding Amar Hall, a well-known events venue.
Lions Club Leadership
A dedicated member of the Dartford Lions Club, Rags served as their 52nd President — a role he was honoured to hold for a second term. He went on to become a District Officer for Lions Clubs International, overseeing community service initiatives across the region.
Deputy Mayor of Bexley
In 2022-2023, Rags served as Deputy Mayor of the London Borough of Bexley. During his tenure he attended over 110 civic events, from citizenship ceremonies and school prize-givings to charity galas and community celebrations across the borough.
Councillor Today
Now serving as Conservative Councillor for Bexleyheath Ward, Rags works tirelessly on the issues that matter most to residents: supporting local businesses, keeping communities safe, investing in young people, and protecting the character of Bexleyheath.
A Family Built on Service
The Sandhu family's commitment to community and enterprise spans generations.
Darshan Singh Sandhu MBE

His legacy continues to inspire the family’s work today.
Avtar Singh Sandhu MBE
Rags’ brother, Avtar Singh Sandhu, also received the MBE in recognition of his service to the community. A Past Mayor of the Borough of Dartford, Avtar has followed the family tradition of public service with distinction.
