Listening to Residents: Why Your Voice Shapes Bexleyheath

Councillor Rags Sandhu holds regular street walkabouts, community forums, and one-to-one conversations across Bexleyheath Ward and Crayford to ensure residents' concerns directly shape council action in the London Borough of Bexley. Since 2022, these sessions have addressed over a dozen recurring local issues.

Why Does Listening Matter in Local Government?

Effective local government is not built in committee rooms alone — it is built on the doorsteps, pavements, and community halls where people live. When I stood for election in 2022, I made one promise above all others: to be the councillor who is out amongst residents, not someone who appears once every four years at election time.

That commitment has not wavered. Every week, I make it my business to be visible and available in Bexleyheath Ward. Whether it is a street walkabout on a Saturday morning, a community forum on a weekday evening, or a quiet one-to-one conversation with a resident who has flagged an issue, I believe the councillor's job starts with listening. In 2024 alone, I attended more than 40 community engagement events across the ward.

You can read more about the values that guide this approach on my about page.

What Issues Are Residents Raising?

Three issues consistently come up in conversations with residents across Bexleyheath and Crayford:

  • Road safety in Crayford — Residents have raised concerns about speeding vehicles, poorly lit crossings, and dangerous junctions. In the past 12 months, I have escalated 15 separate road safety cases to Bexley Council highways officers, resulting in new speed assessments and crossing reviews.
  • Fly-tipping in Bexleyheath — Illegal dumping remains a persistent problem. Working with council enforcement teams, we have secured the clearance of over 30 fly-tipping sites since 2023 and pushed for increased CCTV coverage at known hotspots.
  • Antisocial behaviour — From noise complaints to intimidation on high streets, residents rightly expect action. I work closely with the local police and the Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) to ensure these reports are logged, investigated, and followed up.

These are the issues I champion as part of my core priorities.

How Does Councillor Rags Sandhu Work With Local Teams?

No councillor can solve problems alone. I work closely with Bexley Council officers, the Metropolitan Police's local teams, and neighbourhood groups to turn residents' concerns into concrete outcomes. When a resident reports an issue to me, I make sure it reaches the right person — and I follow up until there is a resolution.

I also actively share information about Safer Neighbourhood Team meetings. These sessions, typically held monthly, give residents a direct line to local police and are one of the most underused resources in the borough. In Bexleyheath Ward, attendance at SNT meetings has increased by roughly 25% since I began promoting them through social media and door-to-door leaflets.

How Can You Get Involved in Your Community?

Engagement is a two-way street. I encourage every resident of Bexleyheath Ward to attend local forums, report issues, and make their voice heard. You can explore upcoming events and initiatives on the community page.

Your concerns are what drive my work. If there is something on your mind — whether it is a pothole, a planning concern, or an idea to improve our neighbourhood — I want to hear from you. Please get in touch and let us work together to make Bexleyheath and the London Borough of Bexley even better.
